California Highway Patrol Officer Ramon Perez said Monday Patterson was transported by a CHP officer from Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs to the jail ward at Riverside County Regional Medical Center in Moreno Valley July 16. She will remain at the medical center until treatment of her injuries allows her to be transferred to the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside. Perez said Patterson’s bail was set at $1 million.

Jeffrey Lee Husted and Jason Dean Stevens, both 26 and both of Twentynine Palms, sustained fatal injuries during the single-vehicle rollover that occurred early June 17 in an unincorporated part of Riverside County in Joshua Tree National Park. Patterson worked as a seasonal fee collector at Joshua Tree National Park, Curt Sauer, park superintendent, said. She was not on duty at the time of the accident. According to information released by the Indio office of the California Highway Patrol, Patterson was driving a 2002 Mitsubishi sedan west on Federal Park Route 12 at an unknown speed just before the crash. She lost control of her vehicle and it spun out of control toward the shoulder, overturning as it went. As the car rolled over, Patterson, who was not wearing her seat belt, was ejected onto the roadway and sustained major injuries.

The Mitsubishi came to rest on its side, leaning against a tree with three other occupants inside. Stevens and Husted, who were sitting the back seat, were not wearing their seat belts and were fatally injured. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene. The right front passenger, Tasmin Woodmansee, 26, of Twentynine Palms, who was wearing her seat belt, also sustained major injuries. Woodmansee was trapped inside the vehicle and had to be rescued by firefighters using the Jaws of Life. The day before the accident, in a meeting with her attorney and prosecutors at the Joshua Tree courthouse, Patterson pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence of alcohol. According to court records, she was granted a conditional release from the judgment if she paid a $1,703 in court fees and victim restitution and attend a nine-month alcohol program. She served two days in jail. The prosecutor, Deputy District Attorney Delaney Henretty, said Patterson’s blood alcohol content was tested at above 0.15 percent when she was arrested in March; the legal limit is .08 percent. Henretty noted in agreeing to the plea bargain, Patterson initialed a statement advising her that driving while impaired is dangerous and puts at risk both the driver and others. “She signed that document,” Henretty said.

Were Patterson to be convicted of the latest charges, it would be grounds for revoking her probation,” the prosecutor said, but, he added, “That’s the least of her problems.” A first-time DUI conviction carries a maximum sentence of six months in county jail. Henretty called the circumstances “uncommon,” saying he never has seen a suspect plea to DUI one day and be accused in a fatal accident the next. His case was Patterson’s second plea bargain; in 2008, a judge dismissed a charge of disorderly conduct by a person under the influence on the condition she pay a court fine and complete a four-month Narcotics Anonymous class. Stevens’ mother, Sharon Watson, said Friday she had “mixed feelings” about Patterson’s being charged with her son’s murder.
